Warning! Hidden Impacts of Wet Muddy Materials on Roller Shells

In crushing operations for mines, sand production and construction solid waste, roller shells operate differently under dry and wet working conditions. Under dry material conditions, the stress on the working surface of roller shells remains relatively stable, and the crushing gap can stay at the set value. However, when wet muddy materials enter the crushing chamber, many hidden operational changes unrelated to direct abrasive wear will occur, which are easily overlooked at many production sites.

With the surface adsorption force generated by moisture, wet mud continuously adheres to the roller shell surface. It accumulates and hardens during continuous equipment operation, forming mud layers of uneven thickness. The hardened mud layers alter the original cylindrical shape of the roller shell, causing dynamic unbalance and persistent vibration as the roller rotates. Vibration transmits to the fitting interface between the roller shell and roller core. Repeated alternating loads impact the interference-fit structure of the roller shell, gradually changing its internal stress distribution and raising the risk of loosening at the assembly interface.

Mud accumulation also changes the actual roller gap. Even without adjusting equipment parameters, the real discharge gap fluctuates continuously, bringing periodic variations to crushing loads. Containing soluble salts, wet mineral mud sticks to the roller shell surface. During heating and cooling cycles from equipment start-stop, it creates a local electrochemical environment and gradually triggers pitting corrosion. This corrosion expands from microscopic areas on the roller shell surface, weakening the surface material structure and making microcracks more likely to form under subsequent loads.

Persistent mud adhesion will alter material biting conditions and lead to material slipping, reducing crushing efficiency and causing large fluctuations in the load of the drive system. Extra alternating stress acts continuously on the roller shell body. In long-term operation, mud trapped in tooth grooves and edges of the roller shell shrinks when the equipment cools down after shutdown. It generates tensile stress on the tooth structure of the roller shell, and repeated stress may induce peeling of surface materials.

For working conditions with sticky wet mud, sites can install pre-screening and mud removal processes at the feeding end to reduce mud content of incoming materials. A reasonable scraper device for roller surfaces can be equipped to remove attached mud timely. Operators should inspect surface corrosion, microcracks and assembly status of roller shells regularly during shutdown.
