Beware! Iron Impurities in Feed Cause Hidden Damage To Blow Bars

During the operation of crushing lines for mines, sand production and construction solid waste, iron debris such as steel bars, bolts and scrap iron can easily enter the system in raw material extraction and belt conveying. Many on-site maintenance personnel only focus on immediate shutdowns caused by blow bar fracture from iron impacts, yet tend to overlook various hidden damages after collisions. Such damages will not trigger shutdown failures right away, but keep accumulating, weakening the structural condition of blow bars, shortening service life, and bringing cascading issues including rotor imbalance, which raises production line maintenance costs.

Iron features higher hardness than ordinary ores. When it strikes the working face of blow bars at high speed, concentrated transient impact stress forms at the collision point. The impact creates tiny pits and microcracks barely visible to the naked eye on the surface of blow bars, which differs from uniform abrasion caused by rock crushing. As the equipment runs continuously and materials strike the bar surface repeatedly, microcracks gradually extend and expand, evolving into surface spalling and local chipping, and the effective wear-resistant layer of blow bars keeps shrinking. Some impacts also alter the metallographic structure at collision points and form weak material zones. These zones wear faster than other areas of the bar surface, leading to uneven blow bar wear and disrupting the force balance of rotor operation.

It is also worth noting that iron may get stuck in the gap between blow bars and impact plates. At the moment of jamming, the load inside the crushing chamber rises sharply. Blow bars bear extra compressive load, and their mounting positions endure continuous alternating stress, resulting in fatigue damage and gradual expansion of fitting clearances. This stress damage occurs on the non-working face of blow bars and is hard to detect through routine visual inspection. Once damage accumulates to a certain level, blow bars may fail during normal crushing even without iron impurities in subsequent feed, disrupting the production rhythm of the whole line.

Multiple measures can be adopted on site to reduce such risks. Install permanent magnetic iron separators on feeding belts and regularly clear iron impurities captured by separators. Arrange staff to inspect the operation of iron removal equipment periodically. Blow bar inspections should not only check large surface defects; use simple tools to check for microcracks and local depressions on bar surfaces. Hunan Xiangjian Machinery Technology Co., Ltd. specializes in mining wear-resistant parts. Its core products include impact blow bars, rolling mortar walls, movable jaw plates and other crusher components. The company serves mining enterprises, sand plants and construction solid waste processors, and can provide adaptation references according to site working conditions.

Many sand and mining enterprises ignore hidden blow bar damage for a long time, facing frequent premature part scrapping and unplanned shutdowns. If your production line often has iron impurities in feed and abnormal blow bar wear, you may share site working condition information for troubleshooting consultations, reduce component loss induced by foreign object impacts, and maintain stable operation of crushing lines.

Hunan Xiangjian Machinery Technology Co., Ltd. is a professional mining machinery equipment and wear parts manufacturer integrating design, development, manufacturing and sales.
